15th International Conference on Scintillating Materials and their Applications (SCINT2019) was held from Sept. 29-Oct. 4 at Sakura Hall of Kawauchi Campus, Tohoku University.

Scientists and scholars from more than 20 countries convened for the 6 days event. The SCINT Summer school was organized just ahead the conference in Sept 26-28 where especially young conference participants learned about scintillation materials preparation. In addition to their active and passionate participation at the lectures, participants enjoyed local specialties and explored the host city during the excursions.

During the conference, we had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Martin Nikl from the conference committee. “Sendai is similar to Prague, not too cold in the winter and not too hot in the summer – very pleasant to stay.” he started. Not new to the city, Dr. Nikl had visited Sendai several times and had spent half a year in the city in one of his stays. “Compared to several years ago, I found the locals especially young generation developed their ability to speak in English.” Yet, he regrets he cannot communicate with taxi drivers and staffs at the restaurants as much as he wants to due to language challenges.

“Rides on the Loople bus is also very good” he adds on his experience with the sightseeing bus which loops around major tourist spots in town. We were delighted to know that he was able to spare some time to enjoy the ride – not to be missed experience for visitors when you are in Sendai.
